Vicky's back from Peru!
Added 29-Sep-2009
My sister Vicky is back at Blackacre Farm after completing a 10 day charity hike in Peru, raising over £3250 for 'have a heart'. Vicky spent 10 hours a day hiking through the Lares region of Peru, over high mountain passes, green valleys and between snow-capped Adean mountains, finishing her expedition at The Lost City of the Incas, Machu Picchu.
We became involved with 'have a heart' as we wanted to support a charity that works to improve the lives of young people in Westcountry communities. We have been donating 2p from every sale of our 6 Large Free Range eggs to 'have a heart' for the past three months and Vicky wanted to take part in the trek to help raise even more for a cause we all believe in.
Vicky completed the Trek with a group of 31 who raised over £85,000 for charity in total, she said the all day treks were a real challenge as were the freezing nights under the stars, but the scariest part of the adventure was the bus ride to the mountains. On the way up torrential snow meant they had to evacuate the bus as it started to slide back down the mountain road!

This week we have had some filming going on at Silverthorne Farm. Richard Rickitt is making a film for children all about farming and how food makes its way from farms to people's kitchens. The film is presented by my nephews favourite presenter Justin Fletcher who is also the voice of Mr Tumble (well known I'm sure to any parents out there!).
Richard came to film some of our lovely hens roaming around Silverthorne Farm where my nephew and I are in the picture. He will soon be coming to Blackacre Farm to see the eggs being packed and placed on our vans ready for delivery throughout the Westcountry. The film will be available from next Spring throughout schools, Early Learning Centres and Richard's website.

The final countdown!

My sister Vicky has just one week before she makes her epic journey out to South America, to climb Machu Picchu for the have a heart charity. Her 10 day trek in Peru, will take her through the tropical Andean rainforest as well as the snow capped mountain ranges of the Andes. Stay tuned for regular updates from the abyss!
Vicky is not the only busy body here at Blackacre though; after having made it through to the finals of the Farmers Weekly Awards we have this week entered the Taste of the West Special Awards 2009 as well, and in addition to helping Vicky with her training as you can see in the pic, our hens even found time to keep producing our award winning eggs!

Vicky is in training for Machu Picchu
Added 01-Sep-2009
On 18th September my sister Vicky who works with me here at Blackacre Farm is trekking Machu Picchu in Peru for have a heart. This week she has been ramping up her training schedule, as it dawns on her that it is actually 8,000 ft above sea level!
To get an idea of just how high it is click here. In preparation for this mammoth charity hike Vicky has been climbing the hay bails as you can see in the pic, walking around all our 200 acres here at Blackacre Farm and even trekking back from some of our other family farms when we go to visit. I take the truck back of course, but then I'm not in training!
To donate please click here. She has almost hit her target but any extra all goes to help build a better future for children living in Westcountry communities.
